Sitting is the New Smoking

That's the news in the health world: get up out of your chair and move around. Sitting is being linked to all sorts of heart problems and diabetes. It is also likely to hurt your back and cause posture problems that can then lead to muscle problems.

Some in the press have called this Silicon Valley Syndrome because of the amount of time people who work on computers site around. Many of these people also eat poorly. That is a deadly combo.

But even if you eat healthy, you are in trouble if you don't move around. You might be sitting there composing wonderful material, designing intricate software, and loads of other impressive stuff. But if you don't move your body, you will develop health problems.

The person who sits at a desk all day might say to themselves, well I am health conscious. I don't eat cake for breakfast and drink beer all day. I drink green tea instead of soda, and i do yoga on the weekends. Well, that's not good enough

The concept became popular after a Ted Talk. The speaker, Nilofer Merchanr, used the phrase to describe the dangerous sedentary lifestyle. People sleep, and then sit. There is almost no activity.
